The Saddle, The Stirrups and The Reins

Before looking at rider position in more detail, it is important to first understand the three main ways the rider physically interacts with the horse - through the saddle, the stirrups and the reins. These are the rider's three primary interfaces with the horse. Through them, the rider receives information from the horse, transfers forces through their body, maintains balance and support, and communicates back to the horse.

When riders think about position, they often focus on body parts - hands, heels, shoulders, hips or core. While these are important, they are only part of the picture. Rider position is ultimately the result of how the rider organises themselves around the saddle, stirrups and reins. The horse is continually creating movement, acceleration, deceleration, momentum and changes of direction. Every stride creates forces that travel through the horse, into the equipment and then into the rider. The rider's body must constantly respond to these forces whilst remaining balanced and organised. This means the saddle, stirrups and reins are much more than pieces of equipment.

The saddle provides support through the pelvis and seat bones, the stirrups provide support through the feet and lower limbs, and the reins provide communication through the hands and upper body. Together they create the environment within which the rider balances, moves and communicates with the horse. Understanding rider position therefore begins by understanding how the rider interacts with each of these contact points individually before looking at how they work together as a complete system.

The Saddle
The saddle is the rider's primary interface with the horse through the pelvis and seat bones. Through the saddle, forces travel between horse and rider, support is created and balance is maintained. It is also where much of the rider's body weight is transferred to the horse.For this reason, the saddle plays a major role in how easily a rider can organise their body. The rider's seat bones need sufficient space to sit comfortably on the flatter weight-bearing portion of the saddle, and the shape, width and size of the saddle can all influence how the rider positions their pelvis, distributes their weight and absorbs movement.

To me, an independent seat comes from having enough balance, organisation and control through the pelvis and trunk that movement can happen underneath the rider without stability being lost elsewhere in the body.The pelvis should be able to move forwards and backwards, side to side and rotationally without the rider becoming rigid through the trunk, thighs, shoulders or hands. Likewise, the rider should be able to move the legs without destabilising the pelvis and use the arms without excessive movement through the torso.This is where the seat becomes much more than simply where the rider sits. It becomes one of the rider's primary support, balance and communication systems.

A well-fitting saddle can help create an environment where this is easier to achieve, but it cannot create stability, balance or body awareness on its own. It can only provide an environment that either helps or hinders the rider's ability to achieve those things.The saddle therefore influences rider biomechanics, but it does not determine them.

The Stirrups
The stirrups form the rider's primary interface through the feet and lower limbs. They provide an additional support point and play an important role in balance, stability and force management.When riding in a seated position, the seat bones and stirrups work together to support the rider. During rising trot, half seat, jumping and many dynamic riding situations, the role of the stirrups becomes even more important as the rider transfers more body weight through the feet.

The feet and ankles are never completely passive in riding. They are constantly making small adjustments to help the rider stay organised on top of the horse. The stirrups therefore play a major role in balance, force absorption, lower leg stability and overall rider organisation.The position of the foot within the stirrup, the rider's ability to bear weight effectively through the lower limb and the organisation of the pelvis above all influence how effectively the stirrups can perform their role.

Many riders are taught to focus on their heels, but the stirrup is far more than simply a place to put the foot. It acts as an important support point that influences balance, movement control and force transmission throughout the body .Even small changes in foot support can influence lower leg stability, hip movement, pelvic organisation and trunk balance, which is why stirrup position and foot support matter far more than simply "heels down" or shoulder-hip-heel alignment.

Like the saddle, the stirrups are not independent. What happens at the pelvis influences what happens at the foot, and what happens at the foot can influence the pelvis.

The Reins
The reins are the rider's primary interface through the hands and upper body. Unlike the saddle and stirrups, they are not intended to support body weight. Their primary role is communication.

However, the rider's balance and organisation can have a significant influence on what happens through the reins. When riders lose balance, it is common to see them use the reins for support without realising it. The hands may become fixed, the contact may become inconsistent or excessive tension may develop through the arms and shoulders. In these situations, what appears to be a rein problem is often a balance problem elsewhere in the body.
The rider's ability to maintain a consistent contact is therefore heavily influenced by what is happening through the saddle, pelvis, trunk and lower limbs. However, many riders underestimate how sensitive the reins can be.

Small changes in finger pressure, wrist position, forearm tension or shoulder stability can significantly influence the pressure experienced by the horse. Independent hands are not simply about keeping the hands still. They require fine motor control within the fingers, stability through the shoulder girdle and enough overall balance that the rider is not relying on the reins for support. This is why rein problems are often a combination of hand and body problems. If the rider lacks stability elsewhere, it becomes much harder to create the small, precise adjustments needed for clear communication through the reins.

At the same time, some rein problems genuinely do originate at the hand itself. How the reins are held, how the wrist is positioned and how the fingers interact with the reins can all influence which muscles are being used and how movement is transferred through the upper body. For this reason, the rider's interaction with the reins affects both the horse and the rider themselves.

How They Work Together
Although the saddle, stirrups and reins each have different roles, they never function in isolation. Every movement created by the horse travels through these interfaces and into the rider. Every aid given by the rider travels back through these same interfaces to the horse. The rider is therefore constantly coordinating between the seat, the feet and the hands whilst adapting to the movement of the horse underneath them.

What happens at one contact point will often influence the others. A rider who loses support through the saddle may begin relying more heavily on the stirrups. Excessive bracing through the stirrups may reduce movement through the hips and trunk. Likewise, a rider who lacks stability through the trunk may create unnecessary tension through the reins. Problems that appear to originate in one area are often influenced by what is happening somewhere else.This is why rider position cannot be understood simply by looking at individual body parts.

However, this is where we begin. Before we can understand how the rider interacts with the horse as a complete system, we first need to understand the individual pieces that make up that system. Throughout Riding Ready, we will explore the saddle, stirrups and reins separately to understand their individual roles. We will then bring them together alongside the movement of the horse to understand how rider position, balance, communication and performance are created. Understanding rider biomechanics therefore requires understanding not only the rider's body, but also how that body interacts with the horse through the saddle, stirrups and reins. Because rider position is not simply about where body parts are placed or how it looks, it is about how the rider interacts with the horse.
